Workshop Questions
The questions we hear most at the potting bench, answered with the same rule throughout: name the garden need, test on the bench, then decide whether the build is an experiment or something you'll trust outdoors.
Do I need to know how to code to automate watering?
No. A battery tap timer with a rain delay covers many gardens. Code becomes useful when you want watering decisions based on calibrated soil moisture readings. See Soil Sensors.
Should I buy a capacitive or resistive soil moisture sensor?
Capacitive. Resistive probes pass current through exposed metal, which corrodes outdoors within weeks. Capacitive probes have a coated blade and last much longer, though their top electronics still need sealing.
How much does a basic automated watering setup cost?
A battery tap timer and a small drip kit typically cost less than a garden hose reel. A DIY sensor node with an ESP32 and capacitive probe costs a little more in parts. The bigger costs are a solenoid valve, enclosure and quality fittings for a dependable outdoor install.
Can I run drip irrigation from a rain barrel?
Yes, but each metre of height gives only about 0.1 bar. Use drip kits rated for gravity feed or add a small 12 V pump with a pressure switch and a float switch to stop dry running. See Rainwater.
Is it safe to leave an automatic system running while I'm on holiday?
Only after at least a week of supervised operation, with a hard maximum run time, a normally closed valve and an independent upstream shut-off such as a mechanical tap timer. Ask a neighbour to look once during your trip.
Why do my solar garden lights stop working in winter?
Short, dull days provide far less charge, panels may be shaded by low sun, water may have entered the housing, and lithium batteries should not charge below 0 °C. Reseal, reposition and size for December. See Solar Lighting.
Can I use mains power for garden electronics?
Keep DIY projects to low-voltage DC. Outdoor mains circuits must meet wiring regulations such as BS 7671 in the UK, including RCD protection, and should be installed by a qualified electrician.
How often should a soil sensor take readings?
Every 15 to 30 minutes is plenty because soil moisture changes slowly. Power the probe only while reading to extend battery life and reduce wear.
Is collected rainwater safe for vegetables?
It is widely used for watering crops. Apply it to the soil rather than over leaves eaten raw, keep butts covered and clean, and never drink it.
Do I need backflow prevention on a tap-fed system?
Yes. Backflow protection stops garden water being drawn into the drinking supply. In the UK the Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations 1999 apply; a double check valve is common for hose-fed garden systems. See Irrigation.
