Our Garden Approach
Tinker Puzzle Frnzy began on an allotment in Gloucestershire, where a run of hot summers and a long walk to the standpipe made watering a daily puzzle. We are a small group of gardeners who also enjoy circuits, and we write for people like us: hands-on, curious and happy to measure things.
Four steps for every project
- Observe. We write down the garden need first: which plant, which bed, what it looked like and when.
- Bench test. Sensors go in jars of real soil, valves get a bucket test, lights get a hose test, all on the shed bench.
- Supervised trial. At least a week outdoors while someone checks daily.
- Season review. Only after rain, heat and the first frost do we call a build dependable.

Experiments and installations are different things
Learn on the windowsill
Breadboards, jumper wires, a single pot, USB power. Ideal for understanding readings. Not left in charge of water.
Trust it outdoors
Soldered joints, sealed enclosures, normally closed valves, maximum run times, overflow routes and a backup shut-off.
No DIY mains work
We cover low-voltage projects only and point you to qualified electricians and local water rules where they apply.
Independence
We buy our own parts and accept no payment for coverage. Brands such as Gardena, Hozelock, Rain Bird or Hunter, and platforms such as Arduino, ESP32, ESPHome and Home Assistant, appear only because readers are likely to meet them. We are not affiliated with any of them. When we get something wrong, we correct the page and note the change.
